Golf Club Bandit Pleads Guilty After Stealing $40K in Equipment

Scottsdale Man Caught in the Act

Scottsdale, Arizona – A man enjoying the sunny days of summer has found himself in a not-so-sunny predicament, pleading guilty to stealing nearly $40,000 worth of golf clubs across the Valley. Walter Dougoud, 43, appears to have taken a swing at more than just the local golf courses – he’s taken aim at local retailers as well. On July 24, Dougoud entered a guilty plea on three felony counts of organized retail theft. Initially, he was facing a whopping 11 counts, each one tied to a separate case of grand theft.

A Game of Thievery

The Scottsdale Police led the investigation, but Dougoud’s antics spread throughout the Valley, affecting numerous golf shops. The heists took place from March through June, with Hornacek’s Golf Shop being one of the primary targets. Michael Savoie, the president of Hornacek’s, recounted the stark moment when everything changed on March 6.

“It was business as usual until the doors opened, and in walked Dougoud,” Savoie explained. “He snatched $3,600 worth of brand-new AI Smoke Paradym drivers right before our eyes!” Savoie described how Dougoud kept his eyes on the staff rather than the merchandise, managing to grab seven clubs before making his quick getaway.

How It All Went Down

In total, Dougoud allegedly struck 11 stores over several months, snatching a staggering total of $43,000 worth of golf gear. Thankfully, local business owners started to talk among themselves, leading to a collective realization that they were facing a common threat. The chatter sparked an investigation, culminating in Dougoud’s arrest on July 16.

Changes in the Business Environment

With Dougoud’s crime spree leaving its mark, Hornacek’s Golf Shop has had no choice but to change how they run their operations. Savoie noted, “We’ve had to rethink our layout; now everyone passes by the repair shop to keep a closer eye on the situation. We also added more cameras and increased our staff.” It’s a sad day when businesses have to tighten up security measures just to keep their goods from walking out the door.

Profit, Not Par

Scottsdale Police Sergeant Aaron Bolin commented on Dougoud’s motive, stating, “It appears that Mr. Dougoud was stealing these clubs to sell or trade for cash or other items of value. This is why he faces organized retail theft charges.” The goal was likely a quick profit, but for many local golfing shops, it’s been anything but fun.

Spotting Stolen Goods

For golf enthusiasts, there’s a warning to keep in mind when shopping for equipment. “If you see a brand-new club selling for significantly less than normal retail price, that’s a red flag,” Savoie cautioned. “If a PGA Superstore is charging a certain amount and you find it for $200 less elsewhere, question that deal.”

The Investigation Continues

As the case rolls on, police are still investigating possible accomplices. There’s speculation that Dougoud had a male and female partner in crime aiding him during the thefts. With sentencing scheduled for August 21 at 8:30 a.m., folks can only hope this story doesn’t end with a continuation of the golf club crime wave.

For now, local golf shops can breathe a little easier knowing that one of their most notorious thieves is behind bars, but the lingering effects of his thefts are sure to be felt for quite some time in the golfing community. Stay vigilant, golfers!
