Free Golf Equipment Given to Local Kids in San Antonio!
This past Saturday was one for the books at the Mission del Lago Golf Course in San Antonio! The Flamingo Club, a local nonprofit, hit the greens in style by gifting dozens of children with free golf gear. More than 30 kids, aged 6 to 12, walked away with brand new custom golf clubs, fun accessories, and even some cool branded apparel!
A Heartwarming Ceremony
The event kicked off with a heartfelt ceremony held at the Rockin G’ Grill. Founder Ray Garza, who is passionate about golf and helping kids, was beaming with pride as he handed out the equipment. He took a moment to express his gratitude towards his family and supporters who have been cheering him on from the sidelines. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here today!” Garza exclaimed.
Garza isn’t just any ordinary guy; he knows firsthand how challenging it can be for kids to access good golf gear. Growing up, he faced struggles of his own while trying to get his hands on the right equipment. And that’s precisely why he started the Flamingo Club—a mission aimed at relieving the financial burden of playing golf for young aspiring players.
Inspiring Words from Local Leaders
The energy was high as guest speakers took the stage to commemorate this special day. Among them were District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda, Rebecca Viagran, the CEO of the South Texas Business Partnership, and Andrew Peterson, President of the Alamo City Golf Trail. These community leaders took a moment to congratulate the little golfers and applaud their parents for fostering a love for the sport.
Exciting Golf Gear for All
As each child’s name was called, they strutted onto the stage wearing bright blue Flamingo Club polos that matched their huge grins. The moment they clutched their new golf clubs was nothing short of magical. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy as Garza handed out the much-anticipated gifts.
Feeling sentimental, Garza shared a personal story about his very first golf club, a small one given to him by his dad. “God kept this club in my hands and now I know why,” he reflected, revealing his dedication to helping other young golfers grow and thrive in the sport they love.
Time to Swing!
To cap off the day, the children were divided into two groups. One group headed over to the putting area, while the other made their way to the driving range. You could feel the excitement as they practiced with their shiny new clubs—some even attempted to channel their favorite pros!
Looking Ahead with Flamingo Club
Garza and the Flamingo Club team don’t plan to stop here. They are eager to continue this important tradition, aiming to provide children from the greater San Antonio area with the much-needed golf equipment in the future. The organization previously held its first official ceremony back in June, and with such enthusiasm, you can bet they’re just getting started!
With every swing, these kids are not just playing a sport; they’re making memories and learning valuable skills that can last a lifetime. Golf is a game filled with patience, focus, and discipline, and thanks to initiatives like the Flamingo Club, the future of golf looks bright in San Antonio!
